The loop in one minute

You pull hay out of the pile, feed/sell it to the cow for cash, spend cash on faster collection and better tools, and keep tunneling until the Needle appears. Gems are a second currency used for systems such as classes and the Drone.

The trap for new players is treating every early upgrade as equally important. They are not. Your goal is to reach the first tool breakpoints quickly.

First five minutes

  1. Pick nearby rainbow hay when it does not require a detour. Focused guide footage notes that it sells for slightly more.
  2. Buy early Speed and Grasp so each interaction clears more hay faster.
  3. Buy the first Bag upgrade before the constant sell trips start wasting your time.
  4. Save for the Pitchfork ($8) instead of maxing the starter hand.
  5. Once you own the Pitchfork, favor its Sweep/Cooldown upgrades and continue scaling Bag capacity.

Cash and Gems are different jobs

Cash powers the run: hands, Bag, Pitchfork, Vacuum, Dynamite and their round upgrades. Gems power the meta layer: class spins and the Drone purchase shown in multiple playthroughs.

Do not walk past visible Gems just because your cash route is working. Forty Gems is a meaningful breakpoint: it matches the documented class-spin cost and the Drone purchase shown in gameplay.

Where to dig

Do not shave the entire outer surface forever. The focused fast-route video explicitly recommends choosing one side and digging inward. That reduces walking and concentrates your upgraded tools on actual depth.

The Needle does not need to be at the exact geometric center or bottom. One long playthrough eventually found it near the top after a huge amount of clearing, while the fast-route guide found it after tunneling inward. Treat the stack as a search volume, not a guaranteed coordinate.

What unlocks after Chapter 1

Return the Needle to the quest NPC. The reward sequence leads into the basement and Chapter 2, where the objective changes from a pure hay search to a mix of key hunting, levers and puzzles.
